For Jenny Holzer’s project for Esopus 3, the artist wanted to use disappearing ink. Tod Lippy sourced something close: photochromatic ink, which only appears, or “charges,” when activated by UV light. At the time, Holzer was working in a number of different media with recently declassified U.S. government documents related to the Iraq war. Here, she chose to reproduce faxes regarding the treatment of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison complex. The project, which presents as sixteen blank pages in the middle of the issue, comes to life with the active participation of readers.
